Harrisburg’s History
Harrisburg is the capital city of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and sits within Dauphin County. With a population of about 50,000. Harrisburg is one of the bigger cities within the Harrisburg-Carlisle metro area.
In 1719, John Harris, Sr settled in the area. 14 years landed purchased 800 acres of land secured through grants. In 1785, John Harris, Jr started planning to build a town on this land and named it Harrisburg. Now talking about leaving a legacy for your kids! In 1791, Harrisburg became incorporated. In 1812 the city was named the Pennsylvania state capital and has held that mantle ever since.
During the industrial revolution, Harrisburg became pivotal with the railroad and steel industries. Steel and iron became dominant and became a major role in the local economy. The city was the center of enormous railroad traffic and its steel industry supported large furnaces, rolling mills, and machine shops. What is the City like?
While the Harrisburg-Carlisle Metro area is one of the largest in the state, Harrisburg itself doesn’t offer much for nightlife but offers plenty of entertainment. The downtown scene offers nightlife and plenty of restaurants and markets including the Broad Street Market (one of the oldest continuously operating farmers markets in the United States). With Harrisburg being within 2 hours of bigger cities like Baltimore, Md., Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. and within 3 hours of New York City and Pittsburgh it is an ideal location to live and play. Speaking of playing… Harrisburg features several minor league sports teams including The Evolution of Penn FC (soccer), Harrisburg Heat (soccer), Harrisburg Senators (baseball), and the Hershey Bears (ice hockey). While public transportation does exist, Harrisburg is a place where you will need transportation as public transit doesn’t run 24/7, and your major shopping outlets such as Walmart, Target, and Giant Food stores are to the outside of the city limits and in suburban areas. The city offers a plethora of outdoor activities such as nature trails (such as Wildwood Park), biking (Greenbelt), boating, and outdoor concerts. Outside of the public school system, there are numerous private and Catholic schools as well.
The Economy in Harrisburg
Harrisburg’s largest employers are the state and federal government. Being the state’s capital provides stability to the economy. The city also has a large representation of service-related industries including health-care (Penn State Hershey Medical Center and UPMC Pinnacle) and a growing technology and biotechnology industry. With National and international firms with major operations in the area including Hershey Foods, IBM, HP, Ahold, Arcelor Mittal Steel, Ollie’s Bargain Outlet, Rite Aid Corporation, Tyco Electronics, and Volvo Heavy Machinery.
